Cat Ba in all its glory
|
|
It
was well worth the rather rough and tortuous journey to reach our
destination and once we reached Cat Ba Island, right on cue the sunset
arrived in all its glory.

Cat Ba Island – a Pearl of the Sea
|
|
30 km to the east
from Haiphong city is Cat Ba Island - Pearl Island. It’s named like
that because of possessing spectacular array of sea and island scenery. Of
1969 small and large islands of Ha Long bay, Cat Ba is the largest island.
With its pristine and romantic beauty, Cat Ba is an ideal place to rest and
release stress.

Sailing through Halong Bay
|
|
Around 8 am, we boarded the minibus to Halong Bay.
It was a fairly easy, 4-hour journey. Michael still being drunk was a
little annoying, but we’re all a little annoying drunk so I put up with
it. I read another book I stole from Johnny about a young boy with
Aspergers Syndrome (written very accurately it seems from his
perspective) and how his whole life turns upside down when he begins to
investigate the murder of his neighbor’s dog. It was quite a
page-turner. I put some Beatles on my ipod and read the whole way there.

The beauty of Halong Bay
|
|
My watch has died. This is a sign. The rest of the trip needs to
be more relaxed. Yesterday, we headed for Halong Bay, about three hours
outside of Hanoi. A private car out was included in our tour, but were
we to do it again, we would forgo the car, save our money, and take one
of the many buses we saw. We reached our junk around noon and were
pleasantly surprised by its high class. We have our own cabin with a
private bathroom, toilet, shower, the whole deal. The dining room has
linen tablecloths, etc…There are six other people on the boat, not
counting the crew, who I think out number us.

Two day trip to Halong Bay
|
|
We had booked ourselves on a two day, one night excursion to Halong Bay. There
were many options available to us, 2 day standard, 2 day
luxury, 3 day budget, 3 day luxury etc. We decided to opt for the two
day ‘luxury’ option.

Halong Bay tour on junk
|
|
Every tour agent in Hanoi sells a trip to Halong Bay. All
the guidebooks warn that you never really know what you are booking because
they just will put you in an empty space on whatever tour is available. We
booked a trip that was mid-priced and involved sleeping on the boat for a
night and hoped for the best!

A boat trip around Ha Long Bay
|
Today we got up to start a 2 day – 1 night cruise in Ha Long Bay.
We got picked up around 0830 and drove for 3.5hrs before reaching Ha
Long City. At the harbour you can clearly see that this is a tourist
boom place. There are sooo many boats lying there, and it’s weird to
imagine that all of them actually get work.

Floating Villages Near Cat Ba Island, Vietnam
|
|
Cat Ba Island is the largest of the 366 islands that comprises the
Halong Bay archipelago in Northern Vietnam and the only one that hosts a
substantial settlement. While the vast majority of Halong Bay's islands
are uninhabited vertical rocks, Cat Ba has a few fishing villages, as
well as a fast-growing town. Except for a few fertile pockets, the
terrain is too rocky for serious agriculture. Hence most residents earn
their living from the sea, while others cater to the tourist trade.
