"Transport to Cat Ba island from Hanoi - Getting to Cat Ba & away"

I. HANOI – HAI PHONG – CAT BA
a, The HOANG LONG TRANSPORTATION COMPANY takes you from Hanoi to Hai Phong by bus then connects with a high speed boat to Cat Ba town ( 4 and half hours Hanoi – Hai Phong – Cat Ba ). It cost:   10US$  = 190.000 VNDong

Departure time from Hanoi:       5.20;   7.20 ;  11.20 ; 13.20                                               

 Arrive in Cat Ba:                     9.45; 11.45; 15.45;  17.45                                    

Departure time from Cat Ba:     7.15 ;  9.15 ; 13.15 ; 15.15

Arrive in Hanoi:                        11.45; 13.45; 17.45; 19.45

Note: In low season (from October to April), Hoang Long company only open the bus from Hanoi at 7.20, 11.20. From Cat Ba at 9.15; 13.15.

The bus departs at: Luong Yen Bus Station, address: 1 Nguyen Khoai str, Hanoi.

Contact: Hoang Long office in Hanoi.

You can buy ticket by yourself at: Hoang Long Office inside Luong Yen bus station before the  departure time 10 minutes or you can pay on the bus. It is easy and available. Make sure it is Hoang Long bus (the red bus) because there are some bus companies have a similar name but they do not connect you to Cat Ba town, they only drop you in Hai Phong city. Do not catch the Hoang Long bus to Ha Long city.

b, Take a train from Hanoi - Hai Phong and hydrofoil to Cat Ba:

We recommend you can take the train at Hanoi train station at 6.00, it takes 2 hours to Hai Phong city, arrive at 8.00, cost = 60.000dong/ ticket, then you take a taxi = 4km = 50.000dong to Ben Binh harbour where the hydrofoil leaves at 9.00 and arrives Cat Ba town at 9.45. The hydrofoil cost = 200.000dong/ ticket.

Warning: We have heard many reports of travellers about there are bad women (tourist hunters) who hang around the boat dock and sell overpriced tickets and might take you to wrong boat. You should avoid them then buy ticket inside the office of Mekong - Hoang Yen hydrofoil at the entrance.

  We can pick you up at your hotel in Hanoi, at Airport or at Hanoi train station by a private car or van, our driver takes you 2 hour though the Red River delta to Hai Phong city. Then connect with  a hydrofoil or a high speed boat which takes you 45 minutes or 80 minute  ( depends  type of speed boats and hydrofoil ) to arrive Cat Ba town.

Cost = 68US$ for a private car = 4 seats; 80US$ for a private mini bus = 16 seats.

Hydrofoil ticket:  Cost = 10US$/ 1 ticket.

Pick up or drop at Hanoi Airport  extra = 20US$ for a private car = 4 seats;  25US$ for a private mini bus = 16 seats.

  II. HAI PHONG - CAT BA

Option1: Hoang Long takes you by bus and speed boat ( 1 and half hour ), cost 120.000 VND.

Departures time:

From 4 Le Thanh Tong -Hai Phong: 8.00; 10.00; 14.00; 16.00

Option 2:  Take a car, motor bike or bicycle to Hai Phong city, then take the slow ferry (every hour) from Dinh Vu ferry station to Cat Hai island. Drive 7 km to the Got ferry station. Take the ferry to Phu Long then drive 40 mins to Cat Ba town. (Cost 3 hours: Hai Phong - Cat Hai island - Cat Ba Town - cheaper than taking the ferry or hydrofoil).

Option 3: You can take a bus or car from Ha Noi to Hai Phong, stopping at Ben Binh ferry station. There are Hydrofoils to Cat Ba town, talking 45 minutes. Departure: 9.00.Cost = 10US$  on Hoang Yen hydrofoil; 10US$ on the speed boat : Mekong Express.

Cat Ba Island Resort & Spa hydrofoil takes you 45 minutes from Ben Binh ferry station to Cat Ba, cost = 200.000dong.

Departure time at Ben Binh: 7.00; 9.00; 13.00; 15.00

Departure time at Cat Ba: 8.00; 10.00; 14.00; 16.00

  There are slow ferries to Cat Ba taking 3 hours, that cost: 5USD$. Departure: 6.00 and 12.20.

Slow ferries:

- From Hai Phong: 6.00; 12.20

Option 4: The HAI PHONG DEVELOPMENT JOIN STOCK COMPANY  takes you 1 hour and 20 minutes from Ben Binh harbor by  a high speed boat to Phu Long (The speed boat also takes bicycle and motor bike). Then connects with a  bus  to Cat Ba Town.

Cost 7.5 US$= 150.000VNDong.

Departure from  Ben Binh (at the corner): 

7.00;  10.00;  13.00; 16.00

Departure from Cat Ba town (Cat Ba tourist wharf - waiting lounge):

Option 5: The CAT BA TOURIST TRANSPORTATION COMPANY takes you 1 hour and 30 minutes from Ben Binh harbour by mini bus to Dinh Vu ferry station and connects with a high speed boat to Phu Long (The speed boat also takes bicycle and motor bike). Then a mini bus takes you to Cat Ba Town. It cost 5.5 US$.

Warning: The price in our website is real price of company, but you should be careful. Because there are some bad women (tourist hunters) who hang around the boat dock and sell overpriced tickets. If the weather is bad, do not be talked into paying extra for the buses to the alternative port and on Cat Ba back to the main living area, this should be included in your original ticket price.

III. HA NOI - HA LONG CITY - CAT BA:

Option 1: From Ha Noi you can take a bus or car to Ha Long city, stopping at Bai Chay harbor. There are tourist boats to Cat Ba town, taking 4 hours ( $ 8USD).

Departure time:

- From Bai Chay: 13.00

- From Cat Ba : 8.00

 Option 2: Take a car, motor bike or bicycle From Hanoi to Ha Long city, then to Tuan Chau island. There is Tuan Chau ferry to Gia Luan harbor- Cat Ba island, you can drive 30 minutes from Gia Luan harbor to Cat Ba town. The daily ferry so easily as it is operated every 1 hour from 6.00 AM till 18.00 PM. It takes only 45- 50 minutes per ferry journey.  In the high season it departs in every 30 minutes.

The price is very reasonable but satisfaction and security guaranteed:
